How to Think · Sitting 5
Fluency Is Not Evidence
A paragraph can be well written and still have no showing. Pull the claim. Ask what would count.
- 28 min
- Talk About It
- 11–14
Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
Bring a model summary or a tidy news blurb. Talk About It without winning. The guide may not be the judge.
Hard edges
- No culture-war bait as the first paragraph.
- Do not grade their politics. Grade the catch.
If they say
- “It cited a study.”
- Named is not shown. Can you walk to the study, or only to the sentence?
Objective
The student can mark a fluent paragraph as CLAIM / SHOWING / ONLY STYLE and refuse to treat style as showing.
The costume of proof
Evidence has a costume: numbers, 'studies,' calm tone, complete sentences. Models wear the costume because they were trained on it. Your job is the same as sitting 1, with better clothes in the way: write the claim, name the showing, name what is only style. If you cannot point to a check, you have a costume. Costumes are allowed in plays. They are not maps.
Big idea
A fluent paragraph is a costume until something is shown.
Try this~12 min total
Costume or showing
12 min- Pick a fluent paragraph (model or headline).
- Write CLAIM / SHOWING / ONLY STYLE.
- Talk About It: what would count as showing?
- Do not let the guide declare the winner.
Lesson guide
Ask after you try
Ask the guide for a short confident paragraph on a low-stakes topic.
- Mark costume vs showing. Verify one factual bit with a second source if needed.
- Is the claim falsifiable?
- Did they treat fluency as a draft?

- English. Rhetoric vs proof.
