This sitting builds on the little version. The student copies from life and then generates the same subject. The comparison is the lesson. The generated image will be smooth, glossy, average. The life copy will be rough, specific, full of dents and stains. The student needs to see that the generator averages away the specific, and that the specific is where taste lives. The student who can name what the generator averaged away has learned the difference between average and specific.
Hard edges
- No faces of classmates or family in the generator. Use objects, not people.
- Do not conclude the generator is bad. It is a different tool. The point is the specific, which requires life.
If they say
- “The generated image looks better.”
- It looks smoother. Smoother is not better for taste. Taste is built by the specific. The generated image has no dents. Your copy has dents. The dents are the taste. The smooth is the average.
- “I can't draw.”
- You do not need to draw. You need to see. The copy is the seeing. Even a bad drawing forces you to look at the specific. The generator does not look. It processes. Your bad drawing with dents has more taste than the generator's smooth average.

The student can copy a real object from life, identify three specific details a generator would average away, and explain why the specific builds taste.
What the generator averages away
A generator takes a million pictures of cups and gives you the average. The average cup has no dent, no stain, no chip, no history. It is a cup that has never been used. A real cup has been used. It has a dent from the time it fell. It has a stain from a thousand cups of tea. It has a chip on the rim from the dishwasher. Those details are what the generator averages away. They are also what makes the cup yours. The student who copies the dents and stains is building taste. The student who only generates is building a library of averages. Both are useful. Only one builds taste.
The copy is the seeing
When you copy from life, you are not making art. You are seeing. The act of copying forces you to look at the specific: the exact curve of the dent, the shape of the stain, the angle of the chip. You see these because you have to draw them. The generator does not see. It processes. The difference is the seeing. The student who copies from life is training the eye to see the specific. The student who only generates is training the eye to accept the average. Taste is the difference.
