The Default Is Not Your Taste
A generator's default is the average of its training. If you live there, your taste is the average. Get out.

This sitting teaches the student to see the default and fight it. The default is the generator's average. If the student always accepts the default, their taste is the generator's. The skill is to constrain the generation: ask for something the default would not produce. Odd lighting. A color the generator avoids. A composition that is not centered. The constraint is the taste. The student who can constrain has a taste. The student who accepts the default has the average.

If they say
- “The default looks fine.”
- It looks fine because it is the average. Fine is not the same as yours. If you want fine, use the default. If you want taste, constrain. The constraint is the choice. The choice is the taste.
- “I don't know what to constrain.”
- Start with the opposite of the default. If the default is golden hour, ask for noon. If the default is smooth, ask for rough. If the default is centered, ask for off-center. The opposite is a constraint. The constraint is a starting point. From there, you develop your own constraints. That is taste.
Objective
The student can identify the default aesthetic of a generator, describe how it differs from a personal aesthetic, and constrain a generation to fight the default.
Seeing the default
Generate ten images without specifying style. Look at them together. The common qualities are the default: a certain lighting, a certain color palette, a certain smoothness, a certain composition. The default is not a flaw. It is the generator's center of gravity. If you always accept it, your taste is the center of gravity. If you can see it, you can push against it. The pushing is the taste. The student who can see the default and constrain it has a taste that is partly theirs. The student who cannot see the default has a taste that is entirely the generator's.
The constraint
To fight the default, constrain the generation. Ask for something the default would not produce: 'Harsh overhead light, not golden hour. Desaturated colors, not vibrant. Off-center composition, not balanced. Rough texture, not smooth.' Each constraint pushes against the default. The result will be less polished and more specific. The specific is the taste. The constraint is the choice. The student who can write constraints has a taste. The student who accepts the default has the average. Both are valid. Only one is yours.

- Now generate the same subject with three constraints that fight the default: odd light, muted color, off-center.
- Compare. Which images are the default? Which are partly yours?
- Write: 'The default is [X]. My constraint is [Y]. The result is [Z].'
- Talk About It: what is the difference between the default and the constrained? Which is more yours?
