Numbers Need Names

A number without a name is just a shape. Is it cups? Grams? Minutes? The name is the number.

Units are the names of numbers. 'Three' is not a measurement. 'Three cups' is. 'Three grams' is a different measurement. 'Three minutes' is another one. The model will give you numbers with units. It will also sometimes give you numbers without making the unit clear, or with a unit that does not match your situation. The child needs to learn that the number is only half the measurement. The unit is the other half. Use kitchen measurements: cups, spoons, the scale. Make the unit a habit.

Hard edges

  • Do not make this a vocabulary test. The point is the habit of naming the unit, not memorizing a list.
  • Keep it to units the child can see and hold: cups, grams, minutes, inches.

It is not just a number. Three cups and three tablespoons are very different amounts. The number is the same. The unit changed everything. Always say the name.

The child can name the unit for a measurement they made and explain why a number without a unit is not a measurement.

The number and its name

If I say 'three,' you do not know what I measured. Three what? Three apples? Three cups? Three miles? The number is only half the measurement. The name is the other half. A talking tool can say 'the answer is 250.' Is that grams? Milliliters? Degrees? If you do not name it, you do not know what you measured. At WisdomForge we always say the name: 250 grams, 250 milliliters, 250 degrees. The name is the number. Without the name, the number is just a shape.

  2. For each, write the number AND the unit. '47 grams. 6 inches. 12 minutes.'
  3. Ask the model: 'How much does a cup of water weigh?' Does it give you the unit? Is the unit right?
  4. Talk About It: what would happen if you got the unit wrong?
