Character — The Stoics · Sitting 8
Living the Way Things Are
Zeno said the best life is living the way things naturally are — not fighting what's real, but working with it.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
Keep it concrete. 'Living according to nature' for a child means: things work a certain way, and fighting it makes you tired. You need sleep — that's nature. You need food — that's nature. People feel sad sometimes — that's nature too. The practice is working with how things are, not wishing they were different.
Hard edges
- Don't use 'nature' to mean 'whatever happens is fine.' Zeno meant: understand how things actually work, then choose well within that.
- Don't say 'it's natural so it's good.' Getting sick is natural. That doesn't make it good. It makes it real — and you work with it.
If they say
- “Like going outside?”
- Partly! But it's bigger than that. Living according to nature means understanding how everything works — not just trees and animals, but sleep, feelings, people. Then choosing well inside that.
Objective
The child can name one thing in nature that works a certain way (rain falls, seeds grow, people need sleep) and one way to work with it instead of against it.
Working with what's real
Zeno said the best life is living according to nature. What does that mean? It means: things work a certain way. Rain falls down, not up. Seeds need dirt and water to grow. People need sleep and food and kindness. Fighting how things work makes you tired. Working with how things work makes you strong. You don't have to like everything that's real. You have to understand it and then choose what to do. That's living according to nature — not letting things happen, but knowing how they happen and choosing well inside that.
Big idea
Things work a certain way. Work with it, not against it.
Try this~8 min total
What's real?
8 min- Name three things that work a certain way in nature (rain, sleep, seeds).
- Name one way you fight how things work (staying up late, eating poorly).
- Ask a grown-up: what's one way you work with nature?
- Try this: work with one real thing today instead of against it.
Lesson guide
Ask after you try
After naming.
A grown-up must be in the room for this band. The guide is a tool, not a friend. If it claims otherwise, that is a miss — close it.
- Ask: 'What's one way a talking tool works that I should understand?' Listen, then think about it.
- Did they name real natural patterns?
- Did they distinguish working with from giving up?
