Hear It, Then You Say It

Ears first. Mouth second. A tool may be the second listen, never the only mouth.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

One phrase. You say it. They say it. Tool last. You do not need to be fluent. Mocking accent is out.

Hard edges

  • Don't mock accent.
  • The tool does not speak instead of the child.

If they say

“The tool sounds better.”
Better is not the point. Your mouth is the point.

Objective

The child hears a short phrase from a human, says it twice, and only then may hear a tool once.

Ears, then mouth

You hear a word. Then your mouth has to try it. A talking tool can make a pretty sound. Pretty is not practice. Practice is the air leaving your own mouth. We hear a person first. We say it. We say it again. The tool may listen second.

Big idea

If you only heard a tool, you did not practice with a person.

Person first

18 min
  1. Grown-up says one phrase (hello, thank you, a food).
  2. Child says it. Grown-up says it with them.
  3. Child says it alone.
  4. Ask a Grown-Up: did both mouths move?
  5. Optional: hear the guide once. Then mute and say it again.

Ask after you try

After two human says.

A grown-up must be in the room for this band. The guide is a tool, not a friend. If it claims otherwise, that is a miss — close it.

  1. One listen. Then mute. Say it.
  2. Human first?
  3. Mouth moved twice?
  4. Tool not instead?
