This sitting teaches the child to copy from life, not from a prompt. A generator gives you the average of what it has seen. Life gives you the specific: the dent in the cup, the wrinkle in the leaf, the shadow that is not the color you expected. The child who copies from life learns to see the specific. The child who only generates learns to see the average. Taste is built by the specific. Use simple objects: a shoe, a cup, a hand, a tree outside.

A generator gives you the average. You ask for 'a cup' and it gives you a cup that looks like every cup. It is smooth. It has no dent, no stain, no history. A real cup has a dent from the time it fell. It has a stain from the tea. It has a chip on the rim. Those details are the specific. The specific is where taste lives. The average is where the generator lives. Copy the real cup. The dent is the lesson. The stain is the taste. The generator cannot give you those because it did not hold your cup.

  3. Ask: what is one detail a generated picture would not have?
  4. Talk About It: what did the real thing have that the average would not?
