What Is a Person For?
Aristotle's four causes explain everything — except the question that matters most: what is a human for? If you can't answer that, you're living without a final cause.

This is the existential sitting. Aristotle's four causes applied to a person: material (body), formal (rational animal), efficient (parents, biology, culture), final (?). The final cause — what a person is for — is the question Aristotle spent his career on. The adult version: do you have a final cause? Or are you living with material, formal, and efficient — but no purpose?
Hard edges
- Don't reduce 'what is a person for?' to a job or a role. Aristotle meant eudaimonia — flourishing, the full realization of human potential.
- If the adult doesn't have a clear final cause, that's normal. The sitting is about noticing the gap, not filling it with a platitude.
If they say
- “Final causes are just purposes we project onto things.”
- Maybe. But you live as if purposes are real — you raise your child for something, you work toward something. If purposes are projections, your life is a projection. Aristotle's challenge: can you live without teleology and still make sense of your own choices?
Objective
The adult can state the four causes, apply them to their own life, and evaluate whether they have a final cause — or are living without one.
The final cause of a life
Aristotle's four causes applied to you: material — your body, your brain, your physical being. Formal — you are a rational animal, a being that thinks and chooses. Efficient — your parents, your culture, your education, your history. Final — what? What are you for? Aristotle's answer was eudaimonia — flourishing, the full realization of human potential through virtuous activity. Not happiness (that's a feeling). Not success (that's external). Flourishing: the process of becoming fully what you are capable of being. The adult question: do you have a final cause? Or are you living with material (a body), formal (a role), and efficient (a job) — but no purpose? Aristotle said a life without a final cause is like a table that doesn't hold anything.
