How the Greeks Thought · Sitting 6
The Mean Is Not a Formula
Aristotle said virtue is contextual judgment, not a rule. 'Find the middle' is useless advice in a crisis. The mean is a practice you develop — not a formula you apply.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
This is the parenting sitting. Aristotle's mean is not a formula — 'find the middle' is useless in a crisis. The mean is a practiced capacity to respond appropriately in a specific situation. The adult question: are you developing the capacity, or applying rules and hoping they work?
Hard edges
- Don't reduce the mean to 'balance.' Balance is a static metaphor. The mean is dynamic — it changes with the situation.
- If the adult is rule-dependent (always the same response regardless of context), the sitting is about noticing that, not about learning a new rule.
If they say
- “The mean is too vague to be useful.”
- That is the point. Aristotle says ethics cannot be reduced to a formula because situations are not formulas. The mean is a practice, not a rule. You develop it by doing it — and by watching someone who does it well.
Objective
The adult can identify one parenting situation where a rule failed and the mean required judgment, and evaluate whether the practice is developing.
The parent's mean
Aristotle's golden mean is not a parenting formula. 'Find the middle' is useless when your child is in crisis. The mean is a practiced capacity to respond appropriately — more discipline here, more patience there, more intervention now, more space later. It depends on the child, the situation, the stakes, your own state. No rule covers that. Aristotle said you develop the capacity by doing it — and by watching someone who does it well. The adult question: are you developing the capacity to find the mean in real situations, or are you applying the same response regardless of context? The model can give you a parenting rule. It cannot assess your child, your situation, your state. The mean is yours to find — and the practice is never finished. Aristotle said virtue is a habit built over a lifetime. Parenting is the daily practice of that habit.
Big idea
The mean is not 'find the middle.' It's 'develop the capacity to respond appropriately in this specific situation.' That's a lifetime practice.
Try this~10 min total
Audit your means
10 min- Name one parenting rule you apply automatically (bedtime, screen time, discipline style).
- Ask: is this rule the right response in every situation — or are there times when the mean is different?
- Name one situation where the rule failed. What did the mean require instead?
- One adjustment: practice reading the situation before applying the rule.

Ask after you try
Off.
- None.
- Did they identify a real rule they apply automatically?
- Is the adjustment about reading context, not just changing the rule?

Where do we apply the same rule regardless of the situation — and what would the mean look like instead?

Integrity. If the parenting mean is generated, you've outsourced the one thing Aristotle said takes a lifetime to develop: judgment in context.
