The Parent's Circles
You teach your children to care about the world. But your own circles might have stopped growing years ago. Where did yours contract?

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
This sitting is about you, not the child. Zeno's oikeiosis says moral concern should expand throughout life. Most adults' circles contract — under stress, under disappointment, under the sheer weight of local obligations. That's not failure. It's fatigue. The Stoic question is whether the contraction is permanent or whether one circle can move outward again.
Hard edges
- Don't guilt yourself for contracting under pressure. The Stoics understood that moral concern has limits — you are a finite being. The question is not 'care about everything' but 'is one circle available to you that you've stopped seeing?'
- Your children learn cosmopolitanism by watching your circles, not by hearing the word. If yours stopped at the school district, that's what they learn.
If they say
- “I can barely care for my own family, let alone the world.”
- That's not a failure. That's the center of the circle holding. The Stoic question isn't whether you can care about the world today. It's whether, when the center is stable, one person in the next ring becomes visible. Not now. When you can.
Objective
The adult can map their own current concentric circles, identify where concern contracted, and choose one circle to expand.
The contracting adult
Zeno's oikeiosis says moral concern expands from self to world. The adult reality is that it often contracts — from world to nation to community to family to self. Not from selfishness, but from exhaustion. The obligations are so heavy at the center that the outer circles become abstractions. The Stoic practice is not to force yourself to care about the whole world again. It's to notice where your circles are now and ask whether one ring could move outward — one person, one cause, one stranger recognized as 'your own.' Not a grand gesture. A single circle, pulled inward by one step. The original WisdomForge booklet on Zeno is the longer text. This assist is for the adult whose circles have shrunk and wonders whether that's the end or a phase.
Big idea
The question is not whether your circles are big enough. It's whether one can still move.

Map your circles
10 min- Draw your actual circles right now — where does your real, daily concern stop?
- Name the year it contracted. What happened?
- One person or cause one ring outward that you could recognize as 'your own' this month.
- Do it without announcing it. Stoic care is not a post.

Ask after you try
Off.
- None.
- Did they map honest circles?
- Is the contraction named with a real cause, not a vague 'life got busy'?

Integrity. If the 'one person' is generated, you've outsourced the most personal moral question: who do you see?
