Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

This is the existential question. Zeno's telos asks what you're FOR — not just what you do. Human nature includes reason, but it also includes relationship, creativity, meaning-making. The adult question is whether your daily life matches your nature — or whether you're living against it and calling it 'being practical.'

Hard edges

  • Don't reduce 'human nature' to a personality test. Zeno meant rational nature — the capacity for reasoned, virtuous life. Your personality is yours; your nature is shared.
  • Living against your nature isn't a moral failing — it's often a practical necessity (jobs, obligations). The Stoic question is whether the necessity is permanent or whether you can realign one aspect of daily life toward your nature.

If they say

I don't have time to philosophize about my nature.
You don't have to. The question is simpler: is there one thing in your day that requires you to stop being yourself? If yes, that's living against nature. The realignment isn't a philosophy. It's one degree.

Objective

The adult can articulate what 'living according to their nature' means beyond biology and identify one way they're currently living against their own nature.

What are you for?

Zeno's telos — live according to nature — is not just about following biology. It asks: what is your nature? Not your personality. Your nature. For the Stoics, human nature is rational and social — you are built to think and to belong. Living according to nature means living rationally and socially, which means living virtuously. The adult question cuts deeper: what in your daily life is against your nature? Not against your preferences — against your nature. The job that requires you to stop thinking. The habit that requires you to stop caring. The arrangement that requires you to stop being honest. These are not 'practical compromises.' They are, in Stoic terms, living against your nature. The original WisdomForge booklet on Zeno is the longer text. This assist is for the adult who suspects they're living against their nature and wants to name it.

Big idea

Living against your nature isn't 'being practical.' It's the most impractical thing you can do.

The nature audit

10 min
  1. Ask: what is my nature? Not personality — nature. What am I built for?
  2. Name one thing in your daily life that is against your nature (requires you to stop thinking, stop caring, or stop being honest).
  3. Is it permanent or could one small change realign it?
  4. One realignment this week — not a grand change, one degree closer to your nature.
