Hypothesis Before Search

Write the guess and the test. Then, if you ask a model, hunt for what would prove it wrong.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

School labs often skip this. Do it on paper. Search is allowed after, labeled as search.

Hard edges

  • No medical self-experiment.
  • Don't treat a model's mechanism story as a lab result.

If they say

We don't have lab equipment.
You have a question, a window, and a clock. That's a start. Equipment comes later.

Objective

The student writes hypothesis, test, and disproof before any search or model.

Search is not a lab

A hypothesis is a guess that could fail. Search and models are libraries of other people's guesses, mixed with confident errors. If you start there, you will confirm whatever sounded finished. Write: I think X because Y; I will test by Z; I would drop X if W. Then look. Then, if you want, ask a tool to list other tests — not to bless your guess.

Big idea

If it cannot fail, it is not a hypothesis. It is a brand.

Try this~14 min total

X Y Z W

14 min
  1. One kitchen or backyard question.
  2. Write X/Y/Z/W before devices.
  3. Run Z if safe.
  4. Talk About It: what did search add after, and what did it try to overwrite?

Lesson guide

Ask after you try

After X/Y/Z/W.

  1. Ask for other tests. Do not ask 'am I right?'
  2. Did devices wait?
  3. Is W a real disproof?

What guess did we let a search engine write for us this week?
