Can a Machine Think?
A man named Alan Turing asked the biggest question about computers: can they think? He turned it into a game.

Turing's 1950 question — 'Can machines think?' — is the founding question of AI. He replaced it with a game: if you can't tell whether you're talking to a human or a machine, does it matter? This sitting introduces the question without resolving it. The resolution is the student's job.
Hard edges
- Don't answer the question for them. Turing didn't answer it — he reframed it. The reframe IS the contribution.
- Turing's life (codebreaking, persecution, death) is relevant but not the focus here. The focus is the question. Don't turn the sitting into a biography.

- Turing said maybe. Searle said no — sounding right isn't being right. The game doesn't settle it. It opens the question.

The game Turing invented
In 1950, Alan Turing asked: can machines think? Instead of arguing about what 'thinking' means, he invented a game. A person talks to two hidden partners — one human, one machine. If the person can't tell which is which, does it matter? Turing said: if it walks like a thinker and talks like a thinker, maybe the word 'thinker' is the wrong thing to argue about. The game doesn't answer the question. It asks whether the question matters — or whether the game is the answer. You've played a version of this game already: every time you wonder 'was that a person or a bot?' you're playing Turing's game.

Turing didn't answer 'can machines think?' He asked whether the question changes if you can't tell the difference.
