Four Questions About Everything
Aristotle said to understand anything, you need four answers: what's it made of, what is it, what made it, and what's it for.

Aristotle's four causes are the foundation of explanation. For this age: use a concrete object (a table, a cake, a house). Material (what it's made of), formal (what shape it is), efficient (who made it), final (what it's for). The key insight: each cause answers a different question. You need all four to really understand anything.
Hard edges
- Don't make it abstract. Use a table: wood (material), table-shape (form), carpenter (efficient), to hold things (final). That's the whole concept.
- Don't skip the final cause. It's the one modern science dropped — and it's the one that matters most for the AI connection.
If they say
- “Why do I need four causes — can't I just say 'it's a table'?”
- You can. But if someone asks 'why does the table exist?' you need the final cause — to hold things. If they ask 'what made it?' you need the efficient cause. Each cause answers a different question. That's why there are four.

The student can name the four causes using a concrete object and explain why each answers a different question.
The four questions
Aristotle said: to understand anything, ask four questions. Take a table. What's it made of? Wood. That's the material cause. What is it? A table — it has a flat top and legs. That's the formal cause. What made it? A carpenter. That's the efficient cause. What's it for? To hold things. That's the final cause. Four questions, four answers, one table. Each cause answers a different question. If you only ask 'what's it made of?' you know the wood but not the purpose. If you only ask 'what's it for?' you know the purpose but not the material. You need all four. Now try it on something harder: what is a person for? That's Aristotle's question — and the final cause is the hardest one.

An explanation that tells you how something works but not what it's for is not an explanation. It's a manual.
