Democritus is the first materialist: everything is atoms moving in void. For this age: atoms are tiny building blocks too small to see. Everything is made of them — you, the screen, the air. The cool part: we know they're there because the reasoning works, even though we can't see them. That's philosophy — believing something you can't see because the argument holds.
Hard edges
- Don't make atoms scary. They're building blocks. The question is whether 'just atoms' means 'just nothing' — and Democritus said no.
- Don't skip the question: if everything is atoms, what is a person? That's the sitting's real work.

- “If everything is atoms, am I just atoms?”
- Yes, Democritus would say. But 'just' is doing a lot of work. A song is just notes, but the song is real. A person is just atoms, but the person is real. The question is whether 'just' means 'only' or whether the arrangement is the reality.

The tiny blocks
Democritus said: everything is made of tiny blocks called atoms, moving through empty space called void. Atoms are too small to see. But we know they're there because the reasoning works — if you combine them different ways, you get different things. Wood, water, air, you. Everything. 'By convention sweet, by convention bitter; in reality, atoms and void.' That means: sweetness isn't in the sugar. It's in how the atoms hit your tongue. The sugar is atoms. The tongue is atoms. The sweetness is what happens when they meet. Is a person just atoms? Democritus said yes. But 'just' is doing a lot of work. A song is just notes, but the song is real. A person is just atoms, but the person is real. The question: does 'just' mean 'only' — or does the arrangement matter?

Everything is atoms — but 'just atoms' doesn't mean 'just nothing.' The arrangement is what makes a person real.
