Estimate Before the Oracle

Order of magnitude is a civic skill. People who cannot estimate will believe any fluent number.

Pick a real quantity: phone battery, trip time, a word-problem from their book. The family rule card should already say TRY FIRST.

Hard edges

  • No live timed test as the demo if it tempts cheating.
  • Units matter. A fluent 47 with the wrong unit is a miss.

The calculator is an instrument. The method is the sentences you could say without it.

Objective

The student estimates, shows a method, then may ask a tool to check the path — never to be first hand.

A number without a size is a rumor

Models and calculators emit digits with great confidence. If you do not know whether the answer should be near 4, 40, or 400, you will accept 47 and move on. Estimation is how you keep the oracle honest. Write the ballpark. Show the steps. Then a tool may audit the steps. If it only offers the digit, refuse.
