Not a Subtitle Crutch

This sitting teaches the student that subtitles are a crutch. They help you understand what is said. They do not help you say it. The mouth still has to move. The student watches a short clip in the target language without subtitles. They catch one word or phrase they understood by ear. The catching is the skill. The subtitle skips the catching. The model can translate. The translation is not the understanding. The ear is the instrument.

Hard edges

  • Keep the clip short: one to two minutes. The point is the ear, not the endurance.
  • Do not ban subtitles entirely. The point is the practice of listening without them, not the prohibition.

The student can watch a short clip in the target language without subtitles, catch one word or phrase they understood, and explain why subtitles are a crutch, not a teacher.

The crutch

Subtitles are a crutch. They help you understand. They do not help you speak. When you read the subtitle, your eye does the work. Your ear does not. When you listen without the subtitle, your ear does the work. The ear is the instrument for speaking. The eye is the instrument for reading. If you only read, you cannot speak. The model can translate the subtitle. The translation is not the hearing. The hearing is the practice. Watch a short clip without subtitles. Catch one word by ear. That word is the practice. The subtitle would have skipped it.

  1. Find a short clip in the target language: one to two minutes. A cartoon, a song, a news segment.
  2. Watch it without subtitles. Do not pause. Do not translate.
  3. Catch one word or phrase you understood by ear. Write it.
  4. Now watch it with subtitles. Did you catch more? Did the subtitle skip the ear work?
  5. Talk About It: what did the ear catch that the subtitle made easy?

  1. Ask the model to translate a phrase from the clip. Compare the translation to what you caught by ear. The translation is the model's. The catching is yours. Both are useful. Only one is the ear.
