Listen Once, Speak Twice

A model can model a sound. It cannot take the exam of being understood.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

House rule: mouth first. Language apps wait.

Hard edges

  • No generated 'my sentence' as the utterance they will turn in.
  • Don't mock accent.

If they say

“I'll just play it at them.”
Playing is not speaking. They still have to answer a person.

Objective

The student hears a phrase, produces it twice without looking, then uses a tool only to compare one sound.

Second listen, not first mouth

You will be tempted to let the tool speak and then nod. Nodding is not language. Hear a human or a short recording. Pause. Say it. Say it again. Then, if you want, compare one vowel. Teachers can tell a generated paragraph. Grandmothers can tell a mouth that never moved.

Big idea

The target is a human ear, not a pretty waveform.

Twice before compare

18 min
  1. One useful phrase. Hear it once from a person or class audio — not a chatbot.
  2. Say it twice with the screen down.
  3. Optional: one compare. Then mute and say it a third time.

Lesson guide

Ask after you try

After two says.

  1. Ask about one sound, not a full rewrite.
  2. Two unaided says?
  3. Compare second?
