The Constitution is not a list of rules. It is a design for a government. It says who has power, who checks it, and who can change it.

This sitting teaches the student that the Constitution is a design document. It designs a government: three branches, each with powers, each checking the others. The student needs to see the design, not just memorize the branches. The model can list the branches. The student needs to understand why the design exists: because people with power will abuse it unless checked. The design is the lesson. The checks are the lesson. The model gives the list. The student reads the design.

The design
The Constitution designs a government. It creates three branches: the legislative (writes laws), the executive (carries out laws), and the judicial (judges laws). Each branch has powers. Each branch checks the others. The President can veto a law. Congress can override the veto. The courts can strike down a law. The President appoints judges. Congress approves them. This is not a list. It is a design. The design exists because the people who wrote it did not trust power in one set of hands. They had seen what happens when a king has all the power. They designed a system where no one has all the power. That design is the Constitution. The citizen who understands the design understands the republic. The citizen who memorizes the list does not.
The compromise
The design includes compromises. The three-fifths clause was a compromise between states that enslaved people and states that did not. Enslaved people counted as three-fifths of a person for representation, but they could not vote. The compromise was a design choice. It was ugly. It was also the price of getting the states to agree. The citizen who reads the design and names the compromise understands that the Constitution was not handed down by angels. It was negotiated by people who disagreed, some of whom enslaved other people. The design is brilliant. The compromise is ugly. Both are the Constitution. The citizen reads both.
