This is the capstone for the young band. The student runs the full cycle: two-minute slow look, copy from life with specific details, generate and identify the default, refuse or accept with a reason and an alternative. The output is one cycle, run end to end, that exercises every muscle from the unit. The cycle is the capstone artifact.

Hard edges

  • The student must run every step. Skipping a step is skipping the capstone.
  • The refusal or acceptance must have a reason and an alternative. Without both, it is a preference, not a taste.

The first time, it is. The cycle is the investment. The second time is faster. The third is a habit. The cycle is the capstone. The capstone is the proof that the skill exists.

Objective

The student can run the full taste cycle on one real subject: slow look, life copy, default comparison, and a refusal or acceptance with a reason and an alternative.

The full cycle

The full taste cycle has four parts. Slow look: two minutes on something real. Find the specific. Life copy: draw or describe the specific. The dents, the stains, the details the generator would average away. Default: generate the same subject. See what the generator produces by default. Refusal: refuse or accept the generated image with a reason and an alternative. The cycle exercises every muscle from the unit: the hold, the seeing, the awareness of the default, and the articulation. The student who can run this cycle once has a taste that is exercised. The student who runs it again has a habit. The student who runs it for life has a taste the machine cannot replace.

  1. Pick something real. Look for two minutes. Name three things you did not see at first.
  2. Copy one detail from life. The dent, the stain, the specific.
  3. Generate the same subject. Identify the default: what does the generator produce?
  4. Refuse or accept the generated image. Write a reason and an alternative.
  5. Write: 'I looked [X]. I copied [Y]. The default is [Z]. I [refuse/accept] because [reason]. I would prefer [alternative].'
  6. Talk About It: what did the full cycle build that one step could not?

  1. Show the model the cycle. Ask: 'What did I do that you cannot?' If it says 'you looked slowly and I processed,' that is honest. The slow look and the life copy are yours. The generation is the tool's. The refusal is the taste.
