Objective

The student completes a handmade study, then critiques a generated image of the same prompt for what was averaged away.

The average ghost

A generator gives you the likely picture. Likely is how you get glossy nothing: the same eyes, the same sky, the same 'epic.' Your hand will be worse and more specific. Specific is where art lives. Use a generator later as a foil: what did it smooth out that my ugly sketch still knows?

Big idea

Specific and imperfect beats likely and glossy — as training, and often as art.

  1. Draw from life for ten minutes (a shoe, a cup, a face in a mirror).
  2. Write three specifics you saw.
  3. Generate the same subject (no classmate faces).
  4. Talk About It: what did the average delete?
