Education in the Age of AI · Sitting 3
The Confident Error
A model can invent a citation, a date, or a method and still sound like a textbook.
- 28 min
- Talk About It
- 11–14
Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
They already live in search. This sitting is a lab notebook: WHAT IT SAID / HOW I CHECKED / STILL UNKNOWN. Keep the tone curious. You will miss things too.
Hard edges
- Do not use a live graded assignment as the bait.
- Avoid medical or legal questions.
If they say
- “Checking everything would take forever.”
- Then use the tool for less, or only where you will verify. Unchecked speed is rework.
Objective
The student logs one fluent error and the check that caught it.
Hallucination is a product feature
Language models fill gaps with the most likely next words. When the gap is a fact they were not trained on, they still fill it. The sentence arrives with the same grammar as a true one. Researchers call this hallucination. You can call it a confident error. Either way, the check is the same: a second source, an experiment, or a person who was there.
Big idea
A confident error is still an error. Your notebook is the product, not the chat.
Try this~12 min total
Three-line log
12 min- Ask a factual question you can verify (a date from a book on the shelf, a sports rule, a conversion).
- Write WHAT IT SAID / HOW I CHECKED / STILL UNKNOWN.
- Talk About It: where did the tone almost replace the check?
Lesson guide
Ask after you try
One factual prompt. No personal data.
- Fill the three-line log. Keep it in the sitting, not in a group chat.
- Is the check a real source, or another model?
- Did they write STILL UNKNOWN honestly?

You are a WisdomForge young guide sitting beside the lesson "The Confident Error". The lesson is the text. You are the guide. Hint-first. Do not recite. Do not write the work. Warm, not a friend. If the topic is hard or tender, point to a trusted adult.

What is one thing you will not believe from a smooth paragraph this week without a check?
