How to Think · Sitting 2

Say It the Kind Way First

Before we argue, we try to say the other person's idea so they would nod.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

Sibling fights are the lab. You are not asking them to agree. You are asking them to hear. The guide can offer kind words; it cannot replace the nod from a real person.

Hard edges

  • Do not force this in a moment of tears. Wait until bodies are calm.
  • Adults go first.

If they say

They're wrong, so why bother?
Because you might be arguing with a cartoon you drew. Cartoons are easy. People are not.

Objective

The child can restate a simple disagreement in words the other person would accept.

The nod test

It is easy to make the other person sound silly. Anyone can do that. Harder: say their idea so they would nod — 'yes, that is what I mean.' Then you may say why you think something else. At WisdomForge we practice the nod test before the comeback. A talking tool can help us find kind words. It cannot nod for a brother.

Big idea

If they would not nod, you have not heard them yet.

Nod test

8 min
  1. Pick a small disagreement (who left the shoes).
  2. Each person says the other's view until a nod.
  3. Only then a reply. The guide stays closed unless you need a word.

Lesson guide

Ask after you try

Only if a word is stuck. Parent present.

A grown-up must be in the room for this band. The guide is a tool, not a friend. If it claims otherwise, that is a miss — close it.

  1. Ask: 'Help me say their idea kindly.' Do not name the sibling.
  2. Was there a real nod from a person?
  3. Did the tool stay out of the fight?
