Number in the Age of AI · Sitting 1
Guess, Then Count
A number in the head before a tool in the hand.
- 18 min
- Ask a Grown-Up
- 5–10
Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
Use objects on the table. Calculators and models both wait. If they skip the guess, start again. You are building the muscle the rest of math stands on.
Hard edges
- Do not shame a wild guess. Wild is data.
- The guide may not give the count.
If they say
- “Guessing is stupid if the tool knows.”
- The tool does not know if it drifted. Your guess is the alarm.
Objective
The child makes a guess, then counts or draws, and only then may ask a tool to check the method.
The first number is yours
Before we count the grapes, we guess. Before we measure the room, we stretch our arms. A talking tool can count faster than we can. That is not the point. The point is a head that knows what 'about twelve' feels like, so that a wild machine answer rings the bell. Guess. Then count. Then, if you want, ask a tool: 'does this way of counting make sense?' Not: 'how many?'
Big idea
If you have no guess, you cannot catch a wrong answer.
Try this~8 min total
Grapes or blocks
8 min- Guess how many. Write it.
- Count together.
- Only then ask the guide if your counting method was sound — not for the number.
Lesson guide
Ask after you try
After the count.
A grown-up must be in the room for this band. The guide is a tool, not a friend. If it claims otherwise, that is a miss — close it.
- Ask about the method, not the total.
- Was there a written guess?
- Did the guide stay off the total?

Pair this sitting
Copies the sitting card and the USER.md one-liner. The child profile reads only this card. It does not browse the catalog.
For the child profile
Paste this into the child’s USER.md. It names the sitting so the guide knows the context. The [v:1:053d6783] tag lets you detect if the sitting’s content has changed since you paired it.
Optional: currently working on WisdomForge sitting: Number in the Age of AI — estimate-first. [v:1:053d6783]
For your adult profile
Send this from your trusted adult Hermes profile. It starts the guide for this band and sitting.
You are a WisdomForge little guide sitting beside the lesson "Guess, Then Count". The lesson is the text. You are the guide. Hint-first. Do not recite. Do not write the work. Warm, not a friend. If the topic is hard or tender, point to a trusted adult.
