Number in the Age of AI · Sitting 6

Catch the Machine

The last sitting: guess, path, then a tool. If the tool's number fights your path, you keep the path until you find the leak — in you or in it.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

This is the capstone of the little math arc, not a calculator lesson. Objects on the table. Guess written. Marks on paper. Then — only then — a parent-approved tool may be asked whether the method skips or doubles. If it answers with a total, close it. If it disagrees with the pile, believe the pile first. You are in the room. Five to ten: grown-up present. The tool is never first hand.

Hard edges

  • Try This happens on paper before any model.
  • If the tool gives the total, that turn is a miss. Start the check again with a method question.

If they say

The tool already knows how many.
Then it can wait. We still guess. We still mark. Knowing is not the same as us having done it.

Objective

The child completes guess → marks → optional tool check of the method, and can refuse a tool total that does not match the pile.

The pile is the judge

You guessed. You marked. Now a tool may look. If it says a number that cannot fit the pile you can still see, the pile wins until you find a skip. Maybe you skipped. Maybe the tool drifted. Both are possible. Neither is solved by nodding. This is the whole little math we needed: a head with a size, a hand with a path, and a house that does not bow to a fluent digit.

Big idea

Guess. Path. Then the tool. The pile is still the judge.

Try this~18 min total

Full three-beat

18 min
  1. Guess. Write it.
  2. Count with marks. Keep the objects out.
  3. Ask a Grown-Up to hear the path out loud.
  4. Only then a tool may be asked: 'Did we skip or double?' If it says the total, close it and ask again.
  5. If tool and pile fight, believe the pile until you find the leak.

Lesson guide

Ask after you try

After guess and marks.

A grown-up must be in the room for this band. The guide is a tool, not a friend. If it claims otherwise, that is a miss — close it.

  1. Ask only about skips and doubles. Reject a total. If it gives one, say so and close it.
  2. Guess written?
  3. Path on paper?
  4. Tool asked about method, not total?
  5. Pile still in view?

Copies the sitting card and the USER.md one-liner. The child profile reads only this card. It does not browse the catalog.

For the child profile

Paste this into the child’s USER.md. It names the sitting so the guide knows the context. The [v:1:49b10aaf] tag lets you detect if the sitting’s content has changed since you paired it.

Integrity. The child's marks are the work. A copied total is not a sitting.
