This is the sitting where ancient philosophy becomes immediately relevant. Plato's cave is not a metaphor for ignorant people — it's the default condition. Everyone starts in the cave. The question is whether you've turned around. For students who live in the feed, the cave is not abstract — it's their daily experience.
Hard edges
- Don't let 'we're all in a cave' become nihilism. Plato's point is that exit is possible — through education, questioning, and the willingness to look at what's behind the shadows.
- The AI connection is real but don't force it. If the student connects the cave to social media naturally, follow. If not, plant the seed and let it grow.

The cave is the default
Plato's cave: prisoners watch shadows on a wall and call them reality. One breaks free, sees the fire, sees the objects casting the shadows, climbs to the surface, sees the sun. Returns. Nobody believes her. The allegory is 2,400 years old. It describes the feed. A model generates text that sounds true — that's a shadow. A recommendation algorithm shows you content designed to keep you watching — that's the wall. An influencer performs a life that isn't theirs — that's a shadow of a shadow. Plato's point is not that the prisoners are stupid. It's that the cave is the default. Everyone starts there. The exit is education — not putting information in, but turning the soul around to face what's real. The question: what would it take for you to turn around? And would you come back to tell the others, or would you stay in the sun?
