Flux and the Logos
Heraclitus said everything flows. Most people stop at 'change happens.' The non-obvious part: the change has a pattern, and the pattern is more real than any single moment.

This is the sitting where 'everything changes' becomes a philosophy. The flux (panta rhei) is obvious. The logos — the underlying order that makes the change patterned, not random — is the deep claim. Without the logos, flux is nihilism. With it, flux is the context for practice. The student needs to see both.
Hard edges
- Don't let 'everything changes' become 'nothing matters.' Heraclitus' point is the opposite: things matter because they're practiced in the flow, not despite it.
- The logos is not a god or a mystical force. It's the rational structure of reality — the pattern that makes change intelligible.

Objective
The student can state Heraclitus' flux doctrine, explain the logos (the pattern within change), and evaluate whether flux undermines meaning.
The pattern beneath the flow
Heraclitus: 'You cannot step into the same river twice.' The water changes. The river remains. This is not a metaphor — it's an ontology. Everything is in flux (panta rhei). But the flux is not random. Beneath it is the logos — the underlying order, the rational structure that makes the change patterned. The river changes but flows in a direction. The person changes but retains a character. The cosmos changes but follows a law. Most people see only the flux and say 'nothing lasts.' Heraclitus says: look deeper. The pattern is what lasts. The pattern is what's real. The individual moments are real too — but they're moments, not the whole. The whole is the logos. The ethical consequence: if everything flows, then the things that matter (love, justice, attention) matter because they are practiced in the flow. You don't need permanence to make meaning. You need the pattern.

Flux is not nihilism. 'Everything changes' means the things that matter are practiced in the flow — and the pattern is what's real.
