The Founder Mythologized
Every founder gets a legend. Zeno's death, the shipwreck, the barefoot teacher — which parts are biography, which are propaganda, and does it matter for the philosophy?

This is the historical-critical sitting. Ancient biographies are unreliable — Diogenes Laërtius wrote 500 years after Zeno. The shipwreck may be real; the self-death may be embellished. The question is whether the philosophy needs the legend or survives without it.
Hard edges
- Don't debunk everything. Some stories are likely true (the shipwreck, the teaching on the Stoa). Some are likely embellished (the exact manner of death, the dramatic timing). The practice is calibration, not cynicism.
- If they become purely skeptical — 'nothing in ancient sources is reliable' — push back. The standard is probability, not certainty. We work with what we have.

The legend and the residue
Zeno's biography comes primarily from Diogenes Laërtius, writing 500 years after Zeno's death. The shipwreck is plausible — Phoenician merchants did lose ships, and Zeno was from Citium, a Phoenician colony. The teaching on the Stoa is well-attested across multiple sources. The self-death is reported but varies in detail across accounts. The founding story — shipwreck, bookshop, Crates walking by — has the structure of an origin myth: too perfect to be entirely invented, too neat to be entirely factual. The philosophical question: does it matter? Stoicism is not validated by Zeno's biography. It's validated by 500 years of practitioners who tested it against their lives. Epictetus tested it as a slave. Marcus tested it as an emperor. Seneca tested it as a politician. The philosophy survives demythologizing because it was never founded on the myth — it was founded on the argument.
