Character — The Stoics · Sitting 1

Prohairesis

The unbreakable center is the faculty of choice. Guard it from both tyrants and tools.

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit

This is the philosophical hinge of the whole academy. If they get this, ghostwriting and unattended agents look like what they are: handing over the center.

Hard edges

  • Do not skip the historical enslavement. It is not a TED-talk origin story.
  • If they are in a situation of real coercion, this sitting is not a lecture to endure it silently — get a human.

If they say

The world is more complex than a circle.
Yes. Complexity is not a reason to pretend the next judgment isn't yours.

Objective

The student can explain prohairesis in their own words and apply it to academic integrity and agent permissions.

The center that cannot be owned

Prohairesis is the reasoned choice that Epictetus said was truly ours. Bodies can be chained. Reputations can be smeared. A model can finish your paragraph. None of that is the center unless you agree to move the center into the paragraph, the like count, or the agent. The Seneca problem of AI is preaching inner freedom while shipping work you could not reproduce. The circle is not a mood. It is a refuse-list for your own will.

Big idea

If a tool can do the choosing, you have already moved house.

Center and permissions

16 min
  1. Define prohairesis in four sentences without the reading.
  2. List two ways a model could steal the next choice this week.
  3. Write a refuse that protects the center.
  4. Practice: one assignment done with try-first, hint, cite.

Lesson guide

Ask after you try

Critique the refuse-list. Do not write it.

  1. Ask where the list is theater.
  2. Can they define prohairesis?
  3. Is the refuse specific?
