Objective

The student can explain how a summary is an argument and refuse to cite a model as a historical source.

No accountable speaker

A historian's summary can be argued with. A model's summary has no name on the spine, no edition, no archive. It will sound like a textbook. It is a blend. Using it as a source is like quoting a crowd. Read the document. Read a named historian. Use a model, if at all, as a foil: 'what are you flattening?' Then go back to the text. The republic — and every other past — is a moral practice of not skipping the words.

Big idea

A summary without a name is an argument you cannot cross-examine. Don't let it be your source.
