Howard: privileges would restrain states from invading personal rights in the first eight amendments. Slaughter-House (Miller) confined national privileges to a thin set. Later incorporation used due process. Procedure is the core of due process; substantive liberty is later. Equal protection: classify, then justify; Plessy emptied it; Brown refused Plessy for schools.

Objective
The student can parse Section 1, the person/citizen split, state action, and why privileges or immunities is still in the text after 1873.
Four jobs
Citizenship: birth or naturalization, subject to jurisdiction, dual (nation and state). Qualifier is real — Howard named diplomats and tribes not taxed — not a trapdoor. Privileges or immunities: citizens, against the states. Due process: persons, states, a lawful course. Equal protection: persons, states, the laws' protection. Occasion was race and the Black Codes. Grammar is person/citizen. Dropping either is half the amendment.
Wreck and detour
Slaughter-House (1873) read privileges almost out of existence. Courts then routed around the wreck through due process. That is doctrine, not the amendment. A sitting that says the 14th is just the Bill of Rights has skipped 1791, Barron, and incorporation as afterlife.

Hear Section 1 before the poster. Four clauses. States. Person and citizen are different words on purpose.
