Raise the stakes with them: college, work, health headlines. Do not turn it into a conspiracy hour. The skill is matching the check to the cost of being wrong.
Hard edges
- Health, law, and self-harm: the check is a professional, not a second model.
- Do not ask them to 'jailbreak' a model as a stunt.

- “I'll just ask two models.”
- Two guesses can agree and both be wrong. Independent checks are sources and experiments, not a chorus of the same training data.
Objective
The student can explain hallucination without mythology and design a check appropriate to the claim's stakes.
Stakes change the method
If the claim is a rhyme for a birthday card, a confident error is a shrug. If the claim is a dosage, a date on an application, or a quote you will attribute to a dead author, the same fluency is a hazard. Epistemic humility is not low self-esteem. It is matching your verification to the cost of being wrong — and refusing to let a model set that cost for you.
