Teach the Gap, Not the Slogan
A child who learns the word 'bias' without ever finding a real missing voice has learned a slogan, not a skill.

This is the adult capstone. The child has learned the shelf is not neutral, the frame decides what counts, and the missing voice is a hole. Now you run the full cycle with them once, on something real. Pick a topic the child cares about: a food, a place, a tradition, a problem at school. Ask the model. Find the missing voice. Compare. Name the difference. The child who does this cycle once, with an adult, on something that matters to them, will never again treat a model's answer as the whole room. That is the lesson. Not the word 'bias.' The practice of finding the gap.
Hard edges
- Do not pick a topic that is a wound for the child. Pick something they are curious about, not something that hurts.
- Do not let the cycle become a lecture. The child drives. You guide.
If they say
- “They're too young for this.”
- If they can ask a model a question, they can notice who is missing from the answer. The noticing is the skill. The vocabulary can come later.
- “I don't have time to find the missing voice every time.”
- You do not need to do it every time. You need to do it once, with them, well. Then they do it when it matters. That is the investment.
Objective
The adult can guide the child through one full cycle: ask the model, find the missing voice, compare, and name the difference, using a topic relevant to the child's life.
The slogan is not the skill
A child who can say 'AI is biased' but has never found a real missing voice has a slogan. The slogan will not help them when a model gives a thin answer about their grandmother's cooking, their neighborhood's history, or a culture they care about. The skill is the cycle: ask the model, find the missing voice, compare, name the difference. That cycle, run once on something real, teaches more than a year of talking about bias in the abstract. The adult's job is to run the cycle with the child once, on something the child chose, and then let them do it alone the next time.
What the cycle teaches
The cycle teaches three things a slogan cannot. First, the model is useful. It gives you a starting point. Second, the model is incomplete. The starting point is not the whole answer. Third, the missing voice is findable. It is in a book, a person, a community, a language. The child who learns all three will use the model well and not be used by it. The child who learns only the slogan will either trust the model too much or distrust it too much. Neither is a skill. The cycle is the skill.

Run the cycle once, on something real, with the child. The slogan is not the skill. The cycle is.

- They ask the model. You both read the answer.
- Ask: 'Whose voice is missing?' Let them answer.
- Help them find one real source for that voice: a person, a book, a page.
- Compare. Ask the child: 'What did the model miss that this voice has?'
- Write one sentence together: 'The model said X. The voice says Y. The difference is Z.'

After the full cycle is run.
- Ask the child to tell the guide what they found. 'The model said X. The voice says Y.' Then ask the guide: 'Did you know about Y?' If it did not, that is the proof. If it did, ask why it did not say so the first time. The answer is instructive.
