Aquinas said faith and reason are compatible. Galileo and Darwin challenged it. It's been revised repeatedly. Does it survive — and how do you teach it?

The parent theological humility note: Aquinas's synthesis is a Catholic achievement. Other traditions have different accounts. The academy teaches it as the most systematic attempt to reconcile faith and reason — not as the only possible account. A parent from a different tradition (or no tradition) should feel free to teach this as intellectual history while offering their own account.
Hard edges
- Don't present the synthesis as settled. It has been challenged repeatedly — Galileo, Darwin, biblical criticism. It survives in revised form. Whether the revision holds is a live question.
- If you are a secular parent, don't dismiss the synthesis because you reject faith. The principle — truth cannot contradict truth — is a logical claim available to anyone. The application to faith is optional. The principle is not.

Whether it survives in its Aquinas form is a live question. Whether some form of compatibility is possible is a different question — and most philosophers say yes.

The synthesis after the challenges
Aquinas's synthesis: faith and reason are two wings of one flight. Truth cannot contradict truth. When they conflict, look for the misunderstanding. This synthesis has been challenged repeatedly. Galileo challenged a particular interpretation of Scripture, not the principle itself. Darwin challenged a particular reading of Genesis, not the claim that faith and reason are compatible. Biblical criticism challenged literal readings, not the methodological rule. The synthesis has been revised each time — and it survives in revised form. The adult question: does it survive in a form worth teaching? Most philosophers say some form of compatibility is possible. The warfare thesis (faith vs. reason) is one option. The synthesis is another. The separatist option (faith and reason address different domains, never interact) is a third. Teaching your child all three — and letting them choose — is the academy's stance. The parent's job: present the options honestly, including the one you don't hold.
