How the Greeks Thought · Sitting 8
What Stays When Everything Changes
Parmenides asked what's really real — the changing moments or the underlying being. As a parent, you live this question every day. What stays?

Parent briefing · 5 minutes, before they sit
This is the adult version of the founding debate. Your life is constant change — children grow, career shifts, relationships evolve. Parmenides asks: what is the reality beneath the change? What stays? If you can answer that, you have a foundation. If you can't, the flux is all there is.
Hard edges
- Don't reduce 'what stays' to a platitude ('love endures'). The question is what actually stays — and whether you can name it.
- If nothing seems to stay, that's a real answer. Parmenides' response would be: look deeper. The appearance changes; the being doesn't.
If they say
- “This is irrelevant — we know change is real.”
- Do you? Quantum mechanics says particles are processes. Relativity says time is relative. The Parmenidean question — what is fundamentally real, the changing particular or the underlying being? — is open in physics. It is not a settled question. It is the question.
Objective
The adult can state the Parmenides-Heraclitus debate, apply it to their own life, and evaluate whether 'what stays' is the pattern, the identity, or the commitment.
The being beneath the becoming
Parmenides: what is, is. What is not, is not. Change is appearance; being is reality. Heraclitus: everything flows. The pattern is reality; the moment is appearance. The adult question: in your life — with its constant change, its growing children, its shifting career, its aging body — what stays? Not as a platitude ('family endures') but as an honest assessment. Is there a being beneath your becoming? A pattern beneath your flux? If yes: what is it? If no: can you live with flux as the only reality? Parmenides and Heraclitus are not just ancient philosophers. They are the two ways of seeing your life. One sees the change and asks 'what's real beneath it?' The other sees the change and says 'the change is what's real.' The debate is 2,500 years old. Your life is the laboratory.
Big idea
The founding debate is not abstract. It's the question of your life: when everything changes, what stays? If you can answer that, you have a foundation.
Try this~10 min total
What stays?
10 min- Name everything that has changed in your life in the last five years (career, family, health, beliefs).
- Now: what stayed? Not as a platitude — as an honest assessment.
- Is what stayed a pattern (Heraclitus), a being (Parmenides), or a commitment (your choice)?
- If nothing stayed: is that liberation or groundlessness?
