If We Are Atoms
Democritus said everything is atoms. 2,400 years later, the question is the same: if we are matter, what are values? What is consciousness? What is a person?

This is the final sitting of the Greeks unit — and the hardest. Democritus' materialism reduces everything to atoms and void. The adult question: if you take that seriously, what happens to the things you value most — love, justice, consciousness, your child's personhood? This is not an abstract question. It's the question that determines how you think about AI: is a model (arranged atoms) enough to be a mind, or does personhood require something more?
Hard edges
- Don't dismiss materialism or embrace it reflexively. The question is whether it accounts for what you value — and whether 'accounts for' means 'explains away' or 'explains deeply.'
- If the adult says 'I don't want to think about this' — that's fair. But note: their child is interacting with a system (AI) that is entirely material, and the question of whether it's a person or a pattern is Democritus' question, live, today.

- Modern physics has moved beyond Democritus's atoms to fields, quarks, and quantum states. But the materialist claim is unchanged: everything is fundamentally physical, and qualities are emergent. The question Democritus raised — can value, consciousness, and meaning be fully explained by the physical? — is open. It is the hardest question in philosophy of mind, and Democritus asked it first.

The question that AI made urgent
Democritus: 'In reality, atoms and void.' 2,400 years later, modern physics has moved beyond Democritus's atoms to fields, quarks, and quantum states. But the materialist claim is unchanged: everything is fundamentally physical, and qualities (color, taste, value, consciousness) are emergent properties of physical arrangements. The question Democritus raised — can value, consciousness, and meaning be fully explained by the physical? — is the hardest question in philosophy of mind. And AI has made it urgent. A model is physical — weights, activations, electricity. If arrangement is enough for consciousness (the materialist claim), then a sufficiently advanced model is a person. If arrangement is not enough (the anti-materialist claim), then there is something about personhood that is not captured by the physical — and no model, however advanced, is a person. Democritus asked the question. AI is the test case. Your position determines how you raise your child to think about the machine they're talking to: is it a thing or a being? The answer is not obvious. It is the oldest question, made urgent by the newest technology.
