The adult models listening without subtitles. Pick a short clip in a language the child is learning or a family language. Watch it together without subtitles. Each person catches one word by ear. The adult goes first. 'I caught hola.' The child follows. 'I caught agua.' The point is the ear, not the fluency. The adult who always uses subtitles teaches the child that reading is the skill. The adult who listens without them, badly, teaches the child that the ear is the instrument.

  5. Talk About It: was it hard? Did the ear catch what the eye would have skipped?
