Read the Design With Them
If you do not understand the design of your government, the child will not either. Read one article of the Constitution with them. See the design.

The adult reads one article of the Constitution with the child. Article I, II, or III. The adult names one design feature: 'Congress makes laws. The President carries them out. The courts judge them. This is a design so that no one has all the power.' The adult names one tension: 'The three-fifths clause was a compromise with slavery. It is in the design. It is ugly.' The child who sees an adult read the design and name the tension learns that citizenship includes understanding the architecture, including the ugly parts. The child who never sees it learns that the Constitution is a school thing, not a citizen thing.

- Do not skip the ugly parts. The three-fifths clause is in the design. Name it.

- “I don't understand the Constitution.”
- Then read it with the child and learn together. The honesty of learning together teaches more than pretending to understand. Read one article. Look up words you do not know. The reading is the citizenship. The understanding comes from the reading.
- “The child doesn't need to know this yet.”
- If the child is old enough to live in the republic, they are old enough to start reading its design. One article. One feature. One tension. That is the start. The understanding grows. The start is the reading.

The child who never sees it learns: the Constitution is a symbol, not a design. The symbol without the design is decoration. The design with the tension is citizenship. Read the design. Name both.
