This is the adult capstone. The adult runs the full cycle: read a founding document, audit the design, name a missing voice, connect to an amendment, name a citizen act. Out loud. At the table. On one document. The child sees the full cycle once. That is the investment. The child who sees an adult read the founding, name the gaps, connect to change, and commit to an act will internalize the practice. The child who never sees it will think citizenship is a school subject. One cycle. Out loud. That is the capstone.
Hard edges
- Do not make this a lecture. Run the cycle. Talk through the steps. The child watches.
- The citizen act must be real. Name something you will actually do: vote, read, speak, attend.
If they say
- “The child won't follow all of it.”
- They do not need to follow all of it. They need to see it. The seeing teaches: citizenship is a practice, not a feeling. The understanding comes later. The habit comes from seeing it once.
- “I'm not political.”
- Citizenship is not politics. It is the practice of reading your founding, naming its gaps, and acting as a member of the republic. You can do that without a party, a platform, or a position. The practice is the citizenship. The politics is separate.

- Name the design: 'This is the architecture. One feature is [X]. One tension is [Y].'
- Name a missing voice: 'The room did not include [group].'
- Connect to an amendment: 'The [number] amendment closed a gap.'
- Name your citizen act: 'My act is [read/vote/speak/attend].' Something real.
- Let the child see the full cycle. The seeing is the investment.
