Pythagoras: The Mathematics of Everything — book cover

About This Philosopher

The man who said the universe is made of numbers.

Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570–495 BCE) is one of the most famous and most elusive figures in ancient philosophy. He wrote nothing himself. His followers attributed miracles to him — a golden thigh, memories of past lives, the ability to be in two places at once. His earliest biographers wrote centuries after his death.

And yet behind the legend, there is a real person whose ideas launched a revolution. He founded a community in Croton that combined philosophical study with religious practice. He taught that reality is mathematical structure, that the planets make music as they move, and that the soul is immortal and transmigrates. His ideas influenced Plato, Aristotle, Kepler, and the entire tradition of Western science.

The central Pythagorean claim — that the universe is mathematically structured and that this structure is beautiful — became the foundation of mathematical physics. When Galileo said the book of nature is written in the language of mathematics, he was drawing on Pythagoras. When Einstein wondered why the universe is comprehensible, he was expressing Pythagorean wonder. 2,500 years later, the intuition holds.

WisdomForge adapts Pythagoras across four age levels so the same core ideas grow with the reader.
