About This Philosopher
Democritus of Abdera (c. 460–370 BCE) was born in a city famous for foolishness, spent his entire inheritance on travel and learning, and became one of the most prolific and wide-ranging philosophers of the ancient world. He wrote over 70 works on physics, ethics, mathematics, music, and agriculture. Plato reportedly wanted his books burned.
He was called "the Laughing Philosopher" because he found human folly amusing rather than distressing. While Heraclitus wept at human stupidity, Democritus laughed. His central teachings: everything is made of atoms moving through void, everything happens by necessity, and the highest good is euthymia — a calm, cheerful contentment found not by getting more but by wanting less.
